MORNING PLENARY
The Big Picture: LGBT Equality through a National Lens From coast to coast, our fight for equality continues to make headlines, but what does the future hold? Do we have a “fierce advocate” in the White House? Congress finally passed an inclusive federal hate crimes bill, and DADT has at least been put on the agenda. But how, when, or will they address ENDA and DOMA? What’s the latest from the courts, including the Perry case pending in federal court here in San Francisco? This plenary offers a rare opportunity to hear from — and pose questions to — several of the LGBT movement’s most thoughtful and experienced leaders. PANELISTS: Matt Coles, Project Director, ACLU LGBT and AIDS Project Allison Herwitt, Legislative Director, Human Rights Campaign Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director of External Relations, NGLTF Leonie Walker, Advisor, National Civil Marriage Collaborative MODERATOR: Roberta Achtenberg, Trustee, California State University |

LUNCHEON WITH REMARKS FROM MATT FOREMAN
Matt Foreman is the Program Director for Gay and Immigrant Rights Programs at the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the former executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and a movement leader for more than 25 years. He was also just named head of a national project to improve the responsiveness of federal agencies to LGBT needs. Horizons is honored to have him join us and share some of his insights and analysis of the state of our movement. Appreciation Award to Julie Dorf Julie Dorf has made outsized contributions to the movements for social justice and LGBT equality in the Bay Area and across the globe. With this special award, Horizons is proud to recognize her for six years of outstanding work with the foundation, with Horizons’ donors, and for our community. |
| 1:30 p.m. | BREAK-OUT SESSIONS
Arts as Advocacy Every modern movement for social change has engendered some form of cultural/artistic expression—agitprop theatre and early 20th century labor organizing; the Black Arts Movement and the Black Power Movement in the 1960s; the lesbian publishing boom in the 1980s and the women’s liberation movement. This session will look at how the arts help articulate the LGBT movement’s ideals, engage the public, reflect the movement’s legitimacy, and hold it to account. PANELISTS: Madeleine Lim, Executive Director, Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project Ed Decker, Executive Director, New Conservatory Theater Sean Dorsey, Artistic Director, Fresh Meat Productions MODERATOR: Jewelle Gomez, Director of Grants and Community Initiatives, Horizons Foundation
