Horizons Foundation periodically presents workshops around the Bay Area to help philanthropically minded individuals, couples, and families give to the LGBT community more effectively and strategically. Our educational sessions are designed to be donor networking opportunities in a solicitation-free space. Horizons’ Philanthropy Series covers a wide range of giving topics, with a special emphasis on estate planning because of the particular legal needs of our community in this area as well as the enormous potential for increased charitable giving.
Currently there are no workshops scheduled; but below are some workshops that we have organized in the past.
If you are a donor who needs help with specific questions or other services, please contact Deb Stallings at 415.398.2333 x103 or dstallings@horizonsfoundation.org.
Givers & Shakers Conference
On March 20, 2010, more than 70 LGBT philanthropists gathered at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel for Horizons' third annual Givers & Shakers Conference, a full day of learning, sharing, and exploring philanthropy with larger givers to the LGBT community. This event is geared towards individuals who currently give or have the capacity to give at least $5,000 annually to LGBT organizations.
The day began with a plenary looking at LGBT equality through a national lens. Matt Foreman, Program Director for Gay and Immigrant Rights Programs at the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund,
shared his insights on the state of the movement in a lunch keynote. After three informative breakout sessions which focussed on very diverse topics, the closing plenary examined the state of LGBT
equality at the international level. The conference closed with a wine and cheese reception. Click here for the full conference agenda.

A Funders' Briefing on Redefining LGBT Equality
Please join The San Francisco Foundation and Horizons Foundation for a funders' briefing on a new initiative to broaden the definition of “equality” from one of legal rights and protections,
to one firmly based in the humanity and personal freedoms of LGBT people. This convening will provide funders and donors an opportunity to receive timely information about a new theory of change
and current efforts to build a long-term movement for social equality. Panelists will discuss current research on social attitudes toward LGBT people and how to combat negative attitudes with
messages that change hearts and minds.

How Does California Marriage Change your Estate Plan?
There are lots of questions that come up for couples who are either now legally married or who are thinking about getting married soon!
This panel of LGBT estate planning experts, including Deb L. Kinney of DLKLawGroup PC and Alma Soongi Beck of The Beck Law Group
will help explore the questions related to estate planning and charitable gifting. LGBT couples and
families face particular complications in the estate planning arena because of the discrepancies between federal and state legal recognition.
LGBT people also have special opportunities, including opportunities to create meaningful and permanent legacies to support our community.
This session will explore estate planning issues and techniques for LGBT couples and families wanting to provide for loved ones and maximize
their charitable interests, with the changed legal situation in the State of California.
Listen to a podcast of the session here. [MP3].

A Luncheon for LGBT Elders
Many of you have come to Horizons Foundation’s educational events over the years. This time, we want to learn from you.
Please join us for an informal luncheon and conversation that will help us better understand your needs and approaches to LGBT philanthropy.
Are you interested in joining a “donor circle” that supports a particular LGBT issue? Do you want to talk to peers or professional advisors about
your estate plans? Do you need help finding services for LGBT elders, whether a healthcare provider or an appropriate executor/trustee? Have you
written about your life and legacy as an LGBT elder? Come explore questions like these over lunch at the lovely offices of Northern Trust.
Your input is invaluable as Horizons Foundation figures out our next steps in working with donors who have collected such a wealth of experience!
